Highly decorated St. Charles native Master Sgt. Matthew Sims will be the featured speaker at the annual St. Peters Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, May 27, 2019.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 10-11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial at St. Peters City Hall. The St. Peters Veterans Memorial Commission will host the ceremony to honor American service members who gave their lives in the line of duty.

Sims retired March 1, 2019. The Elgin, Okla., resident earned seven Army Good Conduct Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, four Overseas Service Ribbons, three Purple Hearts, two Soldiers Medals, an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, a Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and an Army Service Ribbon.

Sims was deployed in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. He survived a broken neck, fractured skull, fractured femur, collapsed lungs and shrapnel wounds in his left leg.

The St. Peters Veterans Memorial is located at One St. Peters Centre Blvd., St. Peters, MO. Limited bleacher seating is available; please bring a lawn chair. The ceremony will be held rain or shine.
