Come see how the minds of young artists envision a classical piece of music coming to life: The Picture the Music artwork display at St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre from March 11-25, 2019, will showcase 100 works by area elementary students inspired by Manuel de Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance.
The St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association invited Kindergarten through Grade 6 students throughout the region to listen to this specific selection of symphonic music and create their own artistic interpretations of the music through paintings, colorings or drawings. A panel of experts in art, music and education judged the artwork on originality, creativity and interpretation of the specific musical selection. The top 100 finalists’ artwork is part of a traveling exhibition appearing at the St. Peters’ Cultural Arts Centre and three other locations (Plaza Frontenac, the Magic House and The Schlafly Branch of the St. Louis Public Library).
The mission of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is to enrich people’s lives through the power of music. The volunteer association supports this mission through unique education programs such as Picture the Music, which helps develop the listening skills of children and encourages the integration of music and visual art.
