The “Pen and Paint” Art Exhibit gives truth to the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Set to be on display May 3-June 24, 2018, at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, the “Pen and Paint” Art Exhibit features a unique collaboration among artists and writers.
Home to the Oak Leaf Artist Guild and the Saturday Writers group, the Cultural Arts Centre brought the two creative groups together for this special featured exhibit.
“I thought, how do I get these groups within the Cultural Arts Centre to be working together to create something beautiful?” said Cindy DuBois, Cultural Arts Centre Leader. “And I thought, well maybe we’ll have the Saturday Writers Group write and we’ll have the artists reinterpret what they’ve written.”
And that’s how the project began. In January of this year, Saturday Writers asked their members for poems and short stories containing 1,000 words or less for the collaboration. A total of 31 submissions were received. DuBois then selected 10 stories/poems for 10 members of the Oak Leaf Artist Guild to interpret on a first come, first served basis. Throughout this entire process, the writers and artists remained anonymous to each other.
The paintings will be displayed along with their accompanied written works in the “Pen and Paint” exhibit. Many of the artists and writers will meet for the first time at the exhibit’s opening reception from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the Cultural Arts Centre.
The hope is to then turn the contest around and have the artists paint something for the writers to transcribe into the written word. These works will be displayed in another exhibit, titled “Paint & Pen,” later this year.
The St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre is in the west wing of St. Peters City Hall at One St. Peters Centre Blvd., St. Peters, MO.
