Classes and Programs
The Cultural Arts Centre strives to offer creative, interesting and inspiring visual arts programs for the public with the goal of providing an art experience for everyone, young and old, novice to advanced. Cultural Arts Centre instructors, artists and City staff members also continually search for new programs and classes to offer. Below are some of the classes offered at the Cultural Arts Centre:
Instructor Jerry Thomas
Professionally, Jerry Thomas has been an artist for more than 60 years, but he’s been drawing since before he could even talk. He grew up in a family of artists and while he received a liberal arts education, he has never received formalized art training or even taken an art class. Everything he’s learned he’s studied or taught himself, and he is proud to say since he was 18 he’s never had a day in his art career that he didn’t have a paying job to do.
Now, Jerry focuses mostly on passing all of his expertise and knowledge on to his students, offering classes in a variety of media and subject matter. His most popular class is his Friday afternoon art clinics, which he’s hosted at the Cultural Arts Centre for more than 15 years.
ART CLINIC • Fridays, 2-5 p.m.
$12 St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre member, $15 non-member
All artists, amateur or experienced, are welcome to attend Jerry's Art Clinic, held every Friday afternoon at the Cultural Arts Centre. No need to register in advance, just bring your supplies and a project you are working on, or start something new. Jerry will give you hands-on guidance and instruction.
For information or to register for classes, contact Jerry Thomas directly at firstname.lastname@example.org or 314-878-3048.

Instructor Lorraine McFarland
Lorraine McFarland is an accomplished and award-winning artist, even though she describes herself as a “late bloomer,” having not begun to pursue a career in art until late into her 40s.
With a specialty in pastel painting, Lorraine is a member of Pastel Society of America, International Association of Pastel Societies, Gateway Pastel Society, Best of Missouri Hands, Greater St. Louis Art Association and an elected member of the Bella Arts Group. Open Studio Pastel Classes
Meets second Thursday of the month
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
$60 per class
In this all day “mini-workshop,” you will be introduced to a new concept or two. Award-winning artist Lorraine McFarland will suggest painting projects based on student needs, feedback and requests. Possible painting subjects will include pets/people portraiture, landscapes and still life. Instructor will supply information about the basics of painting with soft pastels (not oil pastels), and how to use your materials to maximize your learning and painting experience.
Other topics discussed will include under painting techniques, how to make your own pastel surfaces and even how to make your own pastels! The fundamentals of design, composition, value, basic color theory and atmospheric perspective will be emphasized. We will be painting from photos or still life indoors, but we may paint outdoors "en plein air" if the students are interested and weather permits. Instructor will demonstrate technique and you will receive lots of individual attention.
A supply list will be provided to each student when they register. Special paper will be required. Instructor will have some paper for sale at each class. Supplies for some projects will be provided by the instructor. Students can order pastels and pastel paper at a reduced rate by contacting the instructor. Some lead time is needed for most orders.

Instructor Daniel Fishback
Daniel Fishback exited the corporate world in 2008 to pursue
his art career full-time, just eight years after he first learned how to paint.
Ten years later, now an award-winning artist, Daniel has decided to give back
to the arts through teaching.
You can find him teaching oil painting classes at
St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre on Wednesday evenings. As a member of the
Missouri Plein Air Painters, Daniel also teaches workshops in the area on his
favorite way to paint, “en plein air.”
Oil Painting Classes
Four-Week Sessions • 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays • Cost: $100 per four-week session
Learn how to see as an artist with new art instructor Daniel Fishback. He will teach you how to select a paintable subject and create beautiful oil paintings from photographs. Learn how to simplify the subject matter by massing shapes together, leaving out useless details, and using correct values and colors to make your paintings look 3-dimensional. All skill levels welcome.
