HISTORY

  • French traders arrived in the late 18th Century in the area of Old Town St. Peters, located north of I-70 and west of Mid Rivers Mall Drive. They raised crops nearby.
  • German Catholics arrived between 1830-1850 and helped settle the small village, which prospered as a farming community.
  • The community's first log church, St. Peters on the Dardenne Creek, was established in 1815. Our City took its name from that church, which expanded several times, eventually becoming the lovely, gothic All Saints Church that travelers can see miles away when approaching St. Peters from the west.
  • In 1910 the community formally incorporated with 269 residents in the Old Town area.
  • As horses and buggies gave way to automobiles and trucks, Salt River Road became Highway 40 in the 1920s, and then a new highway (a precursor to I-70) was built over the Missouri River, bisecting St. Peters.
  • In 1959, the 404 people of 88-acre St. Peters voted to become a city of the Fourth Class under Missouri statutes. This enabled the community to build a municipal water system.
  • By 1968, the City started to build a wastewater treatment system. The City laid the groundwork for growth—a growth that elected officials saw coming with a mobile populous looking for affordable housing in a country atmosphere. Voters supported the City's plan for business growth, continuously passing annexation propositions and bond issues that set the groundwork for amazing growth.
  • From 1970 to the present, St. Peters grew from 486 residents living in the Old Town area to a town of 22 square miles approaching 60,000 residents.
