On the road to a better you, that first step can be the hardest. The St. Peters Rec-Plex offers a number of classes, including a new one perfect for people with arthritis, that can help ease you into a workout routine.

The new Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease Program is suitable for people with arthritis, but is open to anyone looking to reap the benefits of a regular aerobic exercise program. The six-week program also educates people with and without arthritis about the benefits of physical activity, and provides education about arthritis management. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, this program could work for you. Classes meet three times per week for an hour each class. The next session begins Feb. 18, and another session meets April 1. The cost per session is $55/person for Rec-Plex passholders, or $65/person for the general public.

Ready, Set – Move! is a class for anyone who wants to get healthier and stronger, but just didn’t know where to begin. Presented by the Rec-Plex and Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, this six-week program will jumpstart your training, whether you’re young or mature, just completing physical rehabilitation or looking for a workout that will ease you into a routine. Upcoming classes begin Feb. 27 and April 17. The cost is $50/person.

Aqua Aerobics is also another great way to ease into a workout routine and avoid joint pain. Eight classes cost $36/person for Rec-Plex passholders and $46/person for the general public. Some Aqua Aerobics classes are FREE to GOLD PLUS members.

The Rec-Plex offers Twinges in the Hinges aqua aerobics classes for a slower-paced introduction to fitness in the water. This is another great option for people challenged by arthritis. The instructor leads students through a series of exercises designed to help improve joint flexibility and movement.
