Area fans of figure skating can take advantage of a rare treat: You can watch about 900 talented ice skaters, including local Rec-Plex skating school students, compete in the ISI Synchronized Championships. The event will take place Saturday, March 31, and Sunday, April 1, 2012, at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in the Rec-Plex South building. The public can attend the competition for free.
The Rec-Plex previously hosted the Ice Skating Institute’s national synchronized skating championship in 2008. Rec-Plex South has a 1-200-seat ice arena and a second ice rink where the competition will take place. This year’s event will have 898 skaters representing 31 different ice rinks from eight states.
Last year, when Chicago hosted the ISI Synchronized Championships, the St. Peters Figure Skating Association’s Synchro St. Louis Diamond Edges won the 2011 Teen Premier national championship as all six Synchro St. Louis teams finished in the top three. Six teams from the Rec-Plex ice rink will compete again at this year’s competition.
This year’s competition events will take place on Saturday, March 31, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Rink A (1,200-seat arena) and from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in Rink B.
On Sunday, April 1, competition events will take place from 8:30 a.m.-noon in Rink A and 8:30-10:45 a.m. in Rink B.
From 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, Rec-Plex South will host an associated Synchro Showcase exhibition where skaters from throughout the St. Louis area will perform synchro, group and individual exhibitions. Tickets cost $15 at the door for the Synchro Showcase.
