The Cultural Arts Centre is continually searching for new programs and classes. Instructors, artists and city staff members strive to offer creative, interesting and inspiring programs to the public. Below are some of the classes offered at the Cultural Arts Centre. Check our Leisure Line or Rec-Connect for the most current information.

PAINTING DEMONSTRATIONS
See Jerry Thomas in action in these painting demonstrations using different media. No need to register. Reference materials given out at each session. Refreshments will be available.

Color In Depth

9 a.m.-noon. • $26 for each sesssion
An extensive study of the nine fundamental colors used in painting. One class session is designated for each color. We will explore the varieties of each color, its tints, shades, tones, black mixtures and other unique characteristics.

Art Clinic - Open Art Workshops

Fridays, 2-5 p.m. • 15 years and up
$12 Cultural Arts Centre Members/$15 Others
Every Friday afternoon at St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre. Bring supplies and draw or paint in the medium of your choice. Work abstractly or in the traditional forms. “Doctor” Jerry Thomas will assist you with your artistic challenges. Attend as many or few sessions as you wish. No need to register–just walk in!

Jan Groenemann's Art Classes for Kids, Teens and Adults

 

Art for Children 5-12

$84 • 6 weeks ongoing

These classes guide your children in learning to see the miracle of shape, texture, line and color. Using pencil, colored pencil, pen & ink, clay sculpting, cartooning, pastels, watercolor, and acrylics, children can explore their creativity in these ongoing classes that meet 1 hour each week. The class sizes are small to allow for individualized instruction. Most supplies included.

 

Art Classes for Teens

$99 • 6 weeks ongoing (includes some supplies)

Many time slots are available for these ongoing 1½-hour classes for teens to explore all mediums or the medium of choice in pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, pen & ink, cartooning, clay sculpture, pastels, watercolor, acrylics or oil. The classes are designed to give individual instruction. If a student wishes to major in art in college, these classes will help them develop a portfolio.

 

Beginning & Intermediate Classes for Adults

Drawing, colored pencil, pen & ink, watercolor, acrylics, oils, collage, mixed media or clay sculpting

$99 • 6 weeks ongoing

The focus of these classes is on strong composition. Work at your level of experience in the medium of your choice with individual attention from one of the area’s most accomplished artists and award-winning teachers. Two-hour day or 1½-hour evening classes are available. Students furnish their own supplies.

 

Advanced Classes for Adults

$99 • 6 weeks ongoing

This class is for advanced students to work in the medium of your choice or explore new mediums with an emphasis on discovering your own personal style of expression. Also learn how to exhibit and market your work. Private, one-on-one classes are also available for advanced students.

WATERCOLOR SEMINARS

9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Designing in 3D
Friday & Saturday, May 18-19, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. • $110
This two-day workshop will introduce the fiber artist to a palette of three colors using fluid acrylics to paint on fabric. Students will learn how to paint beautiful faces then design their own dolls in muslin and miscellaneous found fibers. Color theory and embroidery techniques will be discussed. Bring extras for the “share” table. Hand-sewing will be done in class; machine sewing will be done at home.

Collage II
10 a.m.-noon • Mondays • May 7-June 18 (no class May 28)
Do you like flowers? Do you like insects? Are buildings your thing? Work from your own photographs or studies to design, paint and embellish collages that have a personal meaning for you. Painting, stitching, gluing, etc. will be part of the process. All skill levels welcome.
 


Designing Small Quilts
Saturday, June 9, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. • $55

This one-day workshop will introduce the fiber artist to a palette of three colors using fluid acrylics. Students will learn how to paint beautiful papers then design their own fabrics on duck cloth or muslin. Color theory and values will be discussed.

Music For Me

 

A parent or caregiver joins in the fun in these great experiences for 1½ - 5 year olds. Children will play with rhythm instruments, use props and learn expressive movement to accompany the songs. The themes are explored through songs, finger plays and dances. The materials fee includes take home materials used during the class and a decorated canvas bag for bringing special things.

Once Upon a Time

Tuesdays, March 27-April 17, 10:15-11 a.m.
$40 + $5 materials fee
Join us for a music class full of fantasy and fairy tales. We'll sing and dance to songs about enchanted castles, fairy tales and nursery rhyme characters. Your little prince or princess will do the Dragon Dance, wave castle flags and attend the royal ball!

Jungle Rhythms
Tuesdays, May 1-22, 10:15-11 a.m.
$40 + $5 materials fee
Lions and tigers and monkeys swinging through the trees will be the theme for our jungle adventure. Songs about jungle animals and their homes will fill our class as we take a make believe trip to the rainforest.

Drama Class for Seniors 55+


For Laughing Out Loud
Mondays, March 19-May 7, 10 a.m.-noon

$65/St. Peters residents • $75/Others (Registration begins Nov. 1)

Laughter truly is the best medicine. In this class seniors will recall moments in their lives that could have been disasters. These close calls will be discussed in class and one will be chosen to perform. This class is guaranteed to make everyone smile. The class will conclude with a performance. Register at the St. Peters Rec-Plex; class will meet at Cultural Arts Centre.

Hip Hop Dance Classes

$10 per weekly session, payable monthly
Wednesdays, 6-7 p.m. (Ongoing)


St. Peters Music Studio at St. Peters’ Cultural Arts Centre will begin offering Hip-Hop dance classes for students ages 8 and up. The classes will be taught in a way that is simple, but effective. Moves will be broken down into fun and easy-to-learn steps. You’ll learn to dance with confidence in a style uniquely your own.

The sessions begin with basic warm-ups and break down into a hip-hop combo. Whether you’ve never danced before or have taken dance classes in the past, our program will give you the necessary tools to own the dance floor.

Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.

Stage Skills/Audition 101 (ages 10 & up)

Mondays, Sept. 17-Nov. 5 (no class Feb. 20)
$85 St. Peters residents / $95 Others

 

Students will be encouraged to express their creativity while being introduced to basic stage acting skills. They will learn theatrical terms, how to develop characters, and perform monologues and scenes from plays or musicals. Students who are interested in trying out for a school play or talent show and dance students who wish to bridge over into the production process of a musical or play will also find this class helpful. Let our professional instructor offer step-by-step instruction in the audition skills of voice and acting.
