Important Ballot Issue

Years ago, St. Peters voters passed a ballot measure that set up a Sewer Lateral Repair Program, which is a type of insurance on the lateral sewer line that leads to your home. As a result, right now everybody pays a nominal annual fee so that if their sewer lateral pipe breaks, they don’t have to pay thousands of dollars out of their pocket all at once for the repair.

On April 8, 2012, you’ll have the opportunity to vote on a similar issue. This time, we’re looking to set up a water line insurance program that would assess a nominal annual fee in return for protection from a huge bill—as much as $6,000—if the water line on your property breaks.

Believe me, I know it’s difficult to swallow the bill when your water line breaks. It happened to me soon after discussing the need for a water line insurance program with Ward 3 resident John Shetterly, whose water line had broke. I soon found that we needed to take this issue all the way to the Capitol because we needed state legislative approval.

The ball got rolling quickly on this issue at a City of St. Peters and St. Charles County level, and then at the state level. I worked with Mayor Len Pagano, County Executive Steve Ehlmann, State Senator Tom Dempsey and State Representative Chuck Gatchenberger, and I want to thank them all for their efforts to get a state law to allow this type of municipal water line insurance.

I remember the moment that this turned into a statewide initiative, instead of just a local St. Charles County issue. When I was testifying in front of the Missouri Legislature, a state Senator envied what we were trying to do for St. Charles County, so he asked permission to widen the scope of the bill to all municipalities in Missouri. We were thrilled to provide this option for every city in the state.

Now, the Board of Aldermen is putting this issue to a local vote. If you support the April 8 measure, we will have a water line insurance program in St. Peters. Please come out and vote on this important issue.

As an Alderman, I have been proud to serve Ward 3, and I appreciate all of the input from our residents. It’s been a pleasure to help in any way that I can. If you need me, you can always call me. My phone number is 314.280.0944.
